It's October and we're ready for some Autumn fun! But can it be Fall if it's still 85 degrees?? I guess it can, but good new in sight it should be cooler this weekend. Jon and I wanted to make sure and see the Fall foliage so we took a picnic dinner up the canyon. It was fun to cool off for a little bit, see the colors and let Evan play. Dean slept.

Tomatoes, Tomatoes, Tomatoes

The wonderful harvest season is upon us. My in-laws love gardening thus we benefit from their bounty when the tomatoes come ripe. This year my father-in-law is out of town thus we have been given the bulk of the ripe tomatoes until he comes back and eats his 10 a day again.

The real question is what to do with this many tomatoes?

The answer is peal them, stick them in a jar, and process them to enjoy on a cold winters day some time come January. And that's just what I did yesterday. Now I know what you are thinking, crazy lady with a toddler and 1 month old, what are you doing putting up that many tomatoes? I asked myself that question about half way through all of this, and the problem was I wasn't thinking. It took me all day long!! But that's ok, I know we'll be eating fabulous lasagna or spaghetti with these yummy tomatoes in March. Some might ask, why didn't you venture out and do salsa or something. We'll we are leaving that adventure to next week when were sure to have more tomatoes. And a big thanks to my friend Michelle for letting me use her caner, I went to buy one and they were all out.

Now our own garden did, let's just say ok. Our zucchini was eaten by squash bugs and we only got 2 beans to sprout and only 1 actual bean to pick off of those. But our corn did great! We'll some of it.

I caught a picture of Evan and Dean still in their pajamas this morning. I can't believe 3 weeks has gone by since Dean was born. I'm just trying to snuggle him as much as possible because before I know it he'll be as big as Evan is now. I'm also trying to catch random pictures. I never want to be accused of have a gazillion pictures of Evan (because he was the first) and not as many of the children to follow.

The first week Evan wasn't so sure about baby Dean. Now he's a fan and Mommy's biggest helper. Whenever the baby monitor is on, and Dean starts fussing Evan says"baby", and if I'm in the other room he comes and finds me to make sure I know that baby is not happy.

So we've lived through 2 weeks with 2 kids. It hasn't been too bad, but I have to admit I had lots of help from my Mom and Dad last week. And people in the ward have been so nice and brought us dinners. And it helps that Dean is a dream baby. He eats good, sleeps good, and is generally a happy baby.

Not very women can say they are 10 months pregnant. But I've hit that point. Thursday was my due date and I really had hope that this little guy would come. But here I sit 40 weeks +2 days. There is an end in sight, we have a c-section scheduled for tomorrow the 24th. So ready or not he's coming out. I guess I'm really lucky because I'm not sick while pregnant, gain a relatively small amount of weight, and carry full term, it's just getting them out that's been my challenge. I'm glad to live in 2008 instead of 1808.

So with my free time I thought I'd make my own little guy a quilt, since I've done so many others this summer. I really like this polka dot fabric and thought the blue stripe went well.

These are some pictures from a few weeks ago. We went to the pool for a few hours in the afternoon. It takes Evan a while to warm up to the water thing, and just when he's liking it the pool takes a forced break.

Zayne loves the water and has no fear.

I've kept myself busy these last few weeks. My mother-in-law has green beans coming out of her hair so she gave some to us. I froze a bunch but thought I'd try canning some too. Thanks to Michelle for letting me use her pressure cooker.

Thanks to my family for having a baby shower for Barclay Baby #2 (No we don't have a name yet). We are the last ones to have a baby this summer so it's fun to see all the other babies at 3 months old and 2 weeks old. It was fun to get a few new things and the books were great! But most of all it's always a fun time to just get together and talk.

Since our ward just split they had a getting to know everyone BBQ/Delayed Pioneer day celebration. The fun for the kids was the bike parade. Evan represented the under 3 crowd with his bike and balloons.

Uncle Brian

I forgot to mention that my brother Brian came to visit over Pioneer day. It was fun to have him and Farrah (his girlfriend) around and Evan just had a blast playing with the both of them. He even asked if he could help with anything around the house, how nice. He ended up washing and cleaning out Jon's car which was super nice, and on Friday he mowed both the back and front yards. Jon appreciated that.

So thanks Brian for coming for a visit, hope you come again.

Kolling Quilt

The Kolling women had a Baby Shower for Crystal last Saturday at Genevieve's house. It was fun to get together and see all the baby stuff. I had gotten just some generic stuff like diapers and baby soap for her, it's not the fun stuff but the needed. I figured she'd get enough quilts and blankets from people and this is her second girl. But later talking with her I found out that she had really wanted one of my little blankets. So while I had the sewing machine out I pulled out all the pink fabric and put together this little number. I'm happy with it and I hope they enjoy it too. I've got to find some time to run to Provo and visit the new baby and take her, her quilt.

Sewing Projects

I've had all of these projects I've wanted to do before the baby comes, because I know I won't have time after, so I've been plugging away at some of the sewing. Thanks Jon for being patient while the kitchen table has been covered in sewing stuff for the last few days. Bathroom cleaning is on my list too anyone want to come help with that one.

This is a diaper bag I've put together for a friend. It's my first "bag" so I'm really happy the way it turned out, and I'm super in love with the fabric that I got at Broadbents in Lehi.

Below is the quit that I've put off doing the binding since April. I had never done binding on a quilt and was a little scared to be truthful. But it needed to get done. So I got out the directions and did it. I'm not going to say that it's perfect or that I didn't use my seam ripper a few times but I think it looks great and I even hand stitched the back of it.

Counting Down

At 37 weeks pregnant we're counting down (or is it up) I don't know, and I'm feeling really pregnant. I liked being this far along with Evan because it was December and we had snow. The hot weather 100+ just doesn't make you feel so great pregnant or not.

We've been eating a lot of BBQ foods so I don't have to heat up the kitchen, and it makes for a few less dishes to wash at the end of the night. The cravings this week were meet by Bratwurst in a toasted bun, macaroni salad with peas and ham, and some fresh fruit. It was all so yummy.

Pioneer Day

Happy Pioneer Day! Yes it is one of Utah's State holidays. It commemorates the Mormon Pioneer's entry into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847. There's a big Days of 47 Parade and Rodeo and many companies give their employees the day off. Jon even had the day off, Thanks Adam's and Smith.

We had our own BBQ at the Barclay house where new mama Kimberly and little Eeva made an appearance. Then we drove up to Salt Lake City to Liberty Park to watch the fireworks with Scott and Anne, and Brian and Farrah. It was tons of fun, even though we didn't get home until about 12:30am.

Evan's Big Boy Bed

Evan has decided that he doesn't want to sleep in his crib for naps or during the night. Mommy and Daddy are tired of sharing their bed and don't really enjoy kicking feet in their backs at 3 in the morning. Thus enters the toddler bed or as we call it "Evan's Big Boy Bed." And yes it's in our bedroom. We are transitioning between still being in the same room with us but sleeping in his own bed. The first few nights were a little rough and then he did really good for a few nights and the last few have been so so as he is getting more teeth in. It's all a work in progress, wish us luck.

What to do on a Saturday Afternoon when it is 100 degrees?

1. Take pictures of your flower beds. The flowers are at their peak this time of year and looking at green makes you think it can’t be that hot.

2. Go see a movie. Think of your ticket as unlimited air conditioning, 2 hours of this makes anyone feel better.

3. Get dinner so you don’t have to heat up your kitchen.

4. Let the kids take their clothes off and play in the blow up pool. Hopefully they’ll splash you a little bit.

5. Sit yourself down on the grass in the cool shade with a cold drink.

I can still see my feet

I'm about a month out from my due date, August 21st. It's the end of July in Utah. It's hot and hotter. But all is well as we have Air Conditioning. I thought I'd show you all that yes I can still see my feet. Wish me luck...

Even has started to nice my bump. I ask him where's the baby and he pats my belly. We all don't know what we are getting into.

Having Fun with Daddy

It's a rare opportunity a mother has to go out with girlfriends leaving the kids behind. I had never actually done it, that was until this last Wednesday. My other mommy friends Janelle and Tiffany and I decided it would be fun to go to dinner and see a movie without the boys. Jon was kind enough to stay home with Evan and as I prepared to leave we discussed what was for dinner and that Evan would need a bath and be ready for bed between 8:30 and 9:00.

Dinner was great and the movie as funny as can be (Get Smart) and as we drove home about 9:30 I thought of the image I might find as I walked through the front door. Evan peacefully sleeping and Jon sitting in the chair watching one of his politics shows. But instead I was dropped off to find the garage door open with the lights all on. I could see Jon and his brother Scott in the garage working on Jon's motorcycle and then came my little monster running down the driveway with his dirty, grimy, greasy hands stretched out happy to see me. Yes he was helping Daddy and Uncle Scott, and had gotten a little dirty. The pictures due no justice. As he had gotten tired he had rubbed his hands in his eyes so he had little raccoon eyes. And to add to all the fun he had a white shirt on.

As for Evan it took 6 months worth of soap and a lot of scrubbing to get him clean. His little shirt I thought was done for. But the next day I sprayed it down with 409 and some other stain cleaner I had and washed it, knowing it most likely would not come clean. But to my surprise it came out sparkling white again. I've arrived as a mom.

The lesson learned by all, boys will be boys, it's ok to leave the kids with dad, don't leave Evan with dad in a white shirt, and moms do need time just to be women.

Tuesday at Wheeler Farm

Today we went to Wheeler Farm up in Salt Lake. It's a fun historic dairy farm just off the freeway, go figure. Admission is free but they do have a tracker ride that costs $1.50. It was really fun to see farm animals in a natural setting. Evan got a kick out of the cows just eating the grass.

Rachel Morrill was crazy enough to catch a stray roaster but it was fun to have the kids pet him.

We had to take a sucker break in the shade while we waited for the tracker ride.

After the farm we made it over to the adjacent park which had a little stream. The kids had fun playing in it. It was a little cold for Evan but he liked navigating and going over and over the bridge.

Jon's Birthday!

We did celebrate Jon's Birthday on the second by going up in the canyon and as his dad likes to say "cracking opening a watermelon." We had a wonderful time eating hamburgers and playing games. I even made cupcakes and we sang to him.

So I think SUMMER has come. We are forecast to have 98-101' temperatures for the next 10 days. Sounds like fun, ya you try being 8 months pregnant and living in bake potato weather. Anyways for our fun Tuesday we had our friends over. Carter and his Mommy, Tiffany, Zayne and his Mommy Janelle. We had a wonderful lunch and they were nice enough to bring their water toys so we let the boys play outside for a little bit. The moms wanted to get in too, but the pool was a little small.

Farm Country

Our Tuesday activity today was taking Daddy to the Airport and visiting Farm Country at Thanksgiving Point. Now my son loves animals so the Zoo and Farm Country have been big hits. Today we got to feed the pigs, ride a horse and take a hay ride with some really big Belgian horses. He enjoyed the cows as well. This is a really fun place for the kids. it's only $3.50 to get in which includes a horse ride. A few hours and a sack lunch and you have it made.

As Evan and I were cleaning up this morning. I proceeded to dust the piano and he wanted to climb up on the piano bench so I let him. He lifted up the keyboard cover and proceeded to play. He just played his song for about 5 minutes so I thought I should capture a future musician in action. Just in case 10 years down the road he is discovered to be some type of child prodigy. I don't think it will happen but I think it's fun catching him in action.

Hogle Zoo

On Tuesday we ventured out to Utah's Hogle Zoo .
It was a beautiful day, the animals were up and moving and we think the kids had fun. We spent most the day tracking around with Zayne and Janelle. When it was past nap time for both we looked at each other and knew it was time to go. Evan liked the big animals the most. He was a good boy the whole time and knew it would be better to sit in his stroller rather then push it, like he's done in the past.

If we were having a girl I would have been tempted to just keep this quilt and come up with something else for Kimberly and Kirk. I don't like bragging but this one came out really good, considering the fact that the sewing machine didn't come out until 9:45pm, and that I went to bed after midnight. At about 11:30pm I got that special little feeling that I was making this for my first niece and that helped me keep going. So little one (whatever your name is going to be) I hope you have many a good naps with this little blanket.

A day at the Beach

What would a trip to California be without a day at the Beach. Although it was cool most of our vacation we managed a drive to Huntington Beach on Monday. Evan and Daddy love the water and Mommy loves the sand and sun. It makes for a wonderful few hours.

Olvera Street, Los Angeles

Another wonderful trip to California. I'm always amazed when we go to visit my parents in LA that there's so many things I never saw as a kid. One includes Olvera Street. I take it back, my mom said we went there when I was still in a baby borne, so it's really been 26 years since I've been there. Olvera Street was the heart of Los Angeles before it was Los Angeles, when it was still part of Mexico. Today they have the street open to pedestrians with shops and restaurants. It's not big, maybe 2 blocks. But it's a fun experience. Just across the street is the Los Angeles Union Station. Yes a train station downtown, and yes people do still travel by train. It was just breath takingly beautiful. It's worth a stop if your ever in LA for a few days.

More Quilting

So my baby quilts continute. This is the latest. I don't want to brag to much, but I really like the way it turned out. Maybe because I feel in love with the Pirate fabric at the store. This quilt went to one of the ladies I visit teach for church. She's due with a little boy in about 4 weeks here.

Little Lederhosen

To our surprise Grandma Balke got Evan some Lederhosen last year while we were in Sounthen Germany. So with the weather getting warmer we busted them out for Church today. I think he liked them, he didn't pull them off. I tried to grab a few pictures, but now a days he spends more time moving away from me, and I haven't learned to be that quick with the camera. Nap Time

Evan's nap time has settle into a pattern that he gets really sleeply between 12:30 and 1:30. Normally we eat lunch and then he takes a nap. But lately it seems like he's fallen asleep at funny times. In the top picture he fell asleep while eating lunch, I turned to put my plate in the dish washer and looked over to find him with his eyes closed. The bottom picture he was watching Curious George while I was taking a shower right before lunch and I came to find him sleeping in the seat. He's a funny guy.

Baby Boy

Many of you know we are expecting our second little one, and have asked what we are having. So to make it official, we are having another little boy! We are really excited! We know what to do with boys, and we have all boy stuff. Life is good, and I'm feeling great as my belly expands, I'm sure the summer will go fast and before we know it we'll be a family of 4, yikes.

We are so proud of Jon for finishing up his MBA. Friday, May 2nd was a big day as the entire family drove to Logan to see him walk. It was a special day and a big accomplishment for him. Thanks for everyone's love and support.

Flower Fun

Sunday was just a beautiful day so I attempted to have Evan sit in front of the flowers. It worked for about 30 seconds. My tulips are finally come up, and they are just sepectacular. I hope they last through the weekend for the party we are throwing.

Thanksgiving Point

I believe my favorite part of spring are the flowers. Not just any flowers but tulips and daffodils. There's no better place here in Utah to see spring flowers than Thanksgiving Point. Each year in April they have a Tulip Festival. For those two weeks it's breathtaking beauty. There's only 1 week left of the Festival but due to the colder than usual weather only about 30% of the flowers have bloomed. So if you haven't gotten the chance, go and enjoy the beauty.

Little Quilt Projects

I don't really consider myself "crafty" or much of a seamstress (that would be my mother, who just volunteered to make someones Prom dress in 2 weeks) but I am tempted by fabric, and I find it perfectly fine to go fabric feeling. So as I've mentioned before there are a million and one babies being born to people I know and good friends, and we are even going to have one too! So for one of my good friends (I'm not going to say who) I picked up the cutest fabric at the Jo'Ann's and for the first time ever followed a quilt pattern and came up with the following. The book is Quick Quilts To Make in a Weekend, the pattern is Oriental Indigo & White Country Quilt, on page 28. Now obviously I didn't use Indigo & White fabric but I like to choices made for a little girl. So in about 3-4 hours I got all of the fabric cut and the top sewn together. I have to admit I'm really happy with the way it came out. I just need to work on the binding and then tie it together. Just wanted to share some of my latest projects. I'm going to miss my Friday nights when Jon gets done with school.

Tijuana, Mexico 2008

Tijuana, Mexico..... Last time I was there I was 12-13 years old. I don't quite remember. All I remember was I was with cousins and it was such an adventure, and I don't think I had any ID at all, but the border guard just believed me and let me back into the US. This time, it was just as easy to cross the boarder into Mexico. Everything seemed a little bit cleaner, but there were still all the vendors using whatever catch they could to get you to come into their store to buy cheaply made trinkets that you really don't need. My favorite line this time was "Free Parking" I guess for the stroller that Evan really didn't want to ride in but loved pushing around. It was a sort nap day for him.

Unlike last time we were in line for just under 2 hours trying to get back into the US with about 2,000 other people. Evan and I have passports from our Europe adventures last year and we made sure to bring those. The boarder agent took them and handed them right back. He didn't even look at the pictures. I felt a little jipped, at least scan them for the amount of time I've spend in this line. At least it wasn't 100 degrees. So I now feel I can go another 20 years without a visit to Tijuana. And I'm reminded why I like the US so much!

Sea World

Like Universal Studios, Sea World is just a California adventure you can't miss. It was a beautiful day in San Diego and we had a wonderful time, with Grandma, Evan, Daria and Gordon. My favorite part was the Shamu show. If you didn't see it with your own eyes it's hard to believe that such large animals can life themselves out of the water and do flips, and to music. It was just beautiful.

We really like the penguins too!

Grandma and Daria thought it would be fun to right the rapids. They thought they wouldn't get that wet, and hour later they came out soaked. I think underwear was still wet when we got to the hotel.

Universal Studios

If you've never been to Universal Studios, Hollywood you have to do it at least once in your life. For me it was a second time with Daria and Gordon but a lot had changed and some stuff hadn't. New was a Curious George play area for kids. Evan is a big George fan. So I gave in and bought the $12 stuffed George. Still 3 weeks later he finds it around the house and lights up, giving it a hug. He can even say George now.

Hollywood

Monday our adventure was Hollywood/Santa Monica. Even though I grew up in Southern California I really can say I'd never seen most of the famous thing like the Hollywood sign, or the Walk of Fame. It was fun to go their with Daria and Gordon.

Carlsbad

We finally made it home after our wonderful Spring Break in California. Our only request was sun, and we got plenty of that. The week and a half was so busy that we'll have to break it down.

Here are the first pictures of camping at Carlsbad. Evan seemed to really like playing the the dirt up at the campsite, and playing in the water down on the beach. By the end all you'd have to say is water and he'd start heading for the beach. I was sad to leave, and I'm sure he was too. The community pool will have to do for most of the summer.

I'm sure like most people we are desperately waiting for spring. But there are signs and the weather is getting a little warmer by the day. It was even warm enough on Thursday and Friday to venture to the little park at the end of our street. Oh how Evan and Zyane had fun. Us Moms had to do most of the work lifting them up and down and chasing them up the stairs. Their just to little to do it all, but they try. Here are some cute pictures of the boys.

Baby Baby Baby

Everyone in the world seems to be having a baby, ok maybe not everyone but a lot of people I know. I've been to 2 showers already with an invite to a third on the kitchen table and with about 5 other friends I know having babies between now and August. Well I guess I can't complain because I'm having one too. Hahahhah So I'm trying to stay away from the hundreds of onsies and bibs and make little quilts. When Evan was in the hospital we were given a beautiful quilt I'm sure made by someone. Come to find out it was the perfect size. A yard square. It was easy to swaddle him in, and it was a good size to cover up with when nursing. I've been sewing up a storm and I have to admit I'm really proud of myself, and I hope the new mommies and babies like them.

The quilt below was the cutest fabric with little lambs and cows. I really like the 100% cotton because it washes up so well.

Yum Yum, Coconut

I don't know if it's just because it's Easter but Hershey's has come out with Kisses that have coconut inside them. It's a little piece of heaven, even more so than the Carmel or peanut butter filled kisses. Anyways I bought a bag and noticed on the back a recipe for Macaroon Cookies. Now I love Macaroons and so does my grandma Betty, any who I made the recipe and Jon just went crazy, he loved them. The recipe on the Hershey website just says to use regular kisses, but I would recommend the coconut ones. Warning though, once you put the kisses on take the cookies right off the cookie sheets. The kisses have a tendency to get really melty. Enjoy.

KISSES Macaroon Cookies
Ingredients:
1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 package (3 oz.) cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg yolk
2 teaspoons almond extract
2 teaspoons orange juice
1-1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 cups MOUNDS Sweetened Coconut Flakes, divided
48 HERSHEY'S KISSES Brand Milk Chocolates

Instructions:1. Beat butter, cream cheese and sugar in large bowl until well blended. Add egg yolk, almond extract and orange juice; beat well. Stir together flour, baking powder and salt; gradually add to butter mixture, beating until well blended. Stir in 3 cups coconut.2. Cover; refrigerate 1 hour or until firm enough to handle. Remove wrappers from chocolates. Heat oven to 350 F. Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll balls in remaining 2 cups coconut. Place on ungreased cookie sheet.3. Bake 10 to 12 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove from oven; immediately press chocolate on top of each cookie. Cool 1 minute; carefully remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely. About 4 dozen cookies.

Buckets or Balloons? What's our favorite

Grandma Barclay was kind enough to watch Evan while I had a doctor's appointment yesterday. She surprised him with a fun Easter Bucket and a lizard hand puppet. So now the question is what is more entertaining. Evan with a balloon or Evan with his bucket. Currently it's the bucket. He can put things in it, and dump them back out. It even acts as a hat that echos when he talks. How fun is that.

Oh and when he saw the camera he wanted to pose. Here's a scary close up of us.

Our little Monkey

We're teaching Evan to fold his arms when we bless the food. He's doing really good at it, so much so that he folds his arms randomly throughout the day. It's kind of funny. He also thinks his hat and gloves are the best thing ever, it normally means it's time to go outside. He just finds them in his room and brings them to me to be put on. Obviously this was early in the day, as he's still in his pajamas.

Charlie is checking to see if there is any breakfast left on Evan's face.

I feel like a somewhat succesful mother. I taught Evan to get on and off his horse by himself. It's great, and he always seems so proud of himself.

Evan has discovered the camera. I asked him to smile and he made this funny face. What a silly guy.

I know it's a little late, but here is my tribute to Valentine's Day. It's not Valentine's Day unless sugar cookies with sprinkles are made.
And a Valentine's Day doesn't go by with out my mom sending us something. This year it was the cutest little bags, and an outfit for Evan. Oh and a little pink outfit, there's some hope that our bundle of joy, due in August might be a girl. It makes me just a little bit excited . And Jon came through with Roses, even a day before. I know it's silly but a girl just likes flowers. Hope you all had a great Valentine's Day

Food At Grandma Betty's House

The Lohrke family never has an excuse to get together and eat. So in honor of Morgan and Henry being in town we all got together at Grandma Betty's house on Sunday for some meatballs and cupcakes. (That doesn't sound right, but it was all good)

A few pictures were snapped of Evan by the amazingly wonderful photographer Dustin Bradbury. He happens to be dating a cousin of mine. He's done some wonderful work, especially Vanessa's Bridals and wedding photos. Check him out, he's good.

Evan has finally figured out music and now responds and reacts to any music, if it's a commercial on tv, the radio in the car or if I turn on some music in the kitchen, he starts dancing or moving. The latest is his feet stomping dance. It's better in person, but still cute as can be on video. Hope you like. Oh and by the way, it was Dixie Chics, My name is Earl that got him to do this. First and foremost,

Happy Birthday Grandpa Balke

Yes it's that time year again when the Birthday's start rolling in. I think between now and March between both families we have 6 Birthdays. It's kind of crazy. Next is Grandma Balke's on the 13th of February. I won't tell you how old she's going to be but it's officially old. Just kidding!

Once again we have snow. Surprise, surprise. We really can't remember a winter so snowy. It hasn't been super cold and we really haven't had a lot of inversion days, but just constant snow. This morning we woke up to about 4-5 inches. That's a lot to shovel. We haven't seen any of our flower bed since the beginning of December, I hope my pansies are doing alright. As mentioned before Evan has discovered snow and that he likes it. So he went outside with me to help shovel. So cute. I even caught him making his own snow angel.

Our Little Showster

We've been busy the last few days. Evan is finally big enough to wear the clothes we bought him in Germany back in August. The picture above is Evan all ready to go to church Sunday Morning.

Uncle Brian and Farrah came over for Sunday dinner. Evan thought Farrah's hat was fun to wear.

As a daily ritual Evan takes all of the pots and pans out of the cupboard then proceeds to climb in and have a little party. I just need to teach him how to put it all back in, because right now that's my job and I'm doing it about 2-3 times a day. But it's ok, he's having fun and it gives him something to do while I'm making dinner, just don't think your going to use a pot that he happens to be using at the moment. Hahaha

The Rocking Horse

For Christmas Grandpa Balke built Evan his very own Rocking Horse. He loves it! A few times a day he goes over and tries to get on, so for now I lift him up and he moves back and forth. He's almost got the hang of dismounting, give him a few months and he'll be king of his horse. When I was growing up I remember my brothers having a horse just like this one, and they loved it. I'm sure it will be a favorite for Evan and the kids to come.

Star Valley, Wyoming

We just got back from a wonderful weekend in Star Valley, Wyoming with the entire Barclay gang - Grandma and Grandpa, Scott, Anne, Will, Kimberly and Kirk and the three of us. The Nield family was nice enough to let us use their beautiful cabin and accompanying snowmobiles. It was cold, but tons of fun. We haven't done much with Evan in the snow. So on Sunday afternoon we thought we'd bundle him up and go outside. He discovered snow, and that he likes walking in it. Now at home he throws fits to go outside and cries when I get to cold and want to come back in. What a silly guy. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Spaghetti and Meatballs

If anyone truly knows me, they know that I'm not a big fan of Spaghetti. For some reason that combination of noodles and sauce just makes my nose turn up. I can do other combinations with the same ingredients, and I even like Spaghetti Pie, which is just spaghetti baked for a while. Anyways I saw a recipe for Turkey Meatballs that made my mouth water and I wanted to test out the new food processor I got for Christmas. So I gave it a try. Ya it was the best Spaghetti and Meatballs I've ever had, and I can't wait to make it again. If your a fan give Everyday Food's recipe a try. Evan even liked then, and he's not quite a meat man yet.

Ingredients
Makes 35 meatballs

3 slices whole-wheat sandwich bread
1/4 cup whole milk
1 1/2 pounds ground turkey, 93 percent lean, dark meat
3 scallions, finely chopped
2 small cloves garlic, minced
2 tablespoons chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 large egg
Coarse salt and ground pepper

Directions
Place bread in food processor; pulse until fine crumbs form. In a small bowl, mix breadcrumbs with milk; set aside at least 5 minutes.
In a large bowl, combine turkey, scallions, garlic, parsley, egg, 1 1/2 teaspoons salt, 1/2 teaspoon pepper, and breadcrumb mixture; mix gently with a fork.

With hands, form mixture into balls, each equal to 2 level tablespoons; arrange in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet lined with parchment paper. To freeze, transfer baking sheet to freezer. Freeze for 1 hour to set shape; transfer frozen meatballs to an airtight container or resealable plastic bag, and freeze for up to 3 months.

If cooking right away:

Bring a large pot of water to a boil over high heat. Generously salt boiling water and return to a boil. Add spaghetti and cook until al dente, according to package directions. Drain pasta; set aside.
In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat. Add meatballs and cook until browned, 5 to 7 minutes. Add marinara sauce and 1/2 cup water; cook until heated through, 5 minutes. Add spaghetti and toss to combine; serve immediately.

Long Beach

On the last big day of our Christmas California Adventure we went with Grandma and Grandpa down to the Long Beach Harbor area, and walked around the shops. Surpisingly it was colder than it looks, with the Queen Mary in the background. Charlie seemed to like going too.

So many things to do while were in California. We thought a day at the Zoo would be nice. I hadn't been there since I was in Kindergarten. It was lots of fun, and Evan seemed to enjoy all of the animals. It was a beautiful day and well worth the drive.

So we had a 2nd Birthday Party for Evan on his actual Birthday the 22nd. It was lots of fun, until it came to singing. He didn't quite like that. Oh well. He understood the whole opening presents this time around.

We love going to the Dog Beach while were in California. We took Brian and Farrah with us this time. It wasn't too cold but we didn't brave the water.

Christmas Eve, no we didn't give Evan Sparkling Apple Juice.

Our traditional Christmas Eve dinner, with Rolladen, Potatoes, Asparagus, and Gurkensalad. It was enjoyed by all.

Christmas morning we all slept in until 9:00. It was great. Evan has the opening presents thing down, and Charlie enjoyed watching.

The Grove

The Grove is a really trendy outdoor shopping center in LA. We were told the Christmas decorations were spectacular, and they were. We spent the evening enjoying the lights and sounds of the season.

Ginko Leaves

We are down in California Enjoying the warm weather. They have a beautiful Ginko Tree that they planted about 15 years ago. The leaves turn yellow and then start falling. If you get one big wind storm all the leaves drop which they did on this tree 2 days after we took these pictures. Evan seemed to like playing in the leaves and didn't want to hold still for a picture.

Evan's 1 Birthday (Party)

So Evan's Birthday is not until Saturday the 22nd for which we are going to be with Grandma and Grandpa Balke in California, so Grandma and Grandpa Barclay wanted to do something before we left for warmer weather. We had a little pre-birthday party on Wednesday, which if Oma knew about, yikes (according to her you don't celebrate Birthdays early it brings bad luck) Hey, he's only going to be 1 once. It was fun, and a good excuse to eat cake and ice cream.

Our Friends the Fritz's came too. Zayne and Evan thought the scooter was fun, they both wanted to go for a ride.

Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte

"It's one of those over-the-top cakes that children dream of and adults find irresistible."

While Mom was up visiting for Thanksgiving she brought with her the Holiday issue of Cook's Illustrated. What a fabulous little magazine with wonderful tips, ideas and recipes. All tested like they had to go to space, the recipies are detailed and precise. From the perfect 3 miunte butter and sugar cream to the instructions for Black Forest Cake. Better know to us as Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte, Black Forest Cherry Cake is one of those over-the-top cakes that you can't resist, and I couldn't so I thought I'd try and make it, as I just happened to have a jar of teh Morello Cherries so critical to the european taste.

The recipe started with a French spongecake or Genoise. It called for 6 eggs, wisked over a pan of barely simmering water until the eggs were warm to the touch or 30 minutes. I did as instructed, but the cake came out as flat as a hockey puck. So I just wipped up a skratch chocolate cake, and it tasted just as good.

Now this is not a cake for those that love the super sweetness of butter cream, and don't expect that. The Whipped Cream adds a softness to the cake and the cherries just a bit of tart. It is a cake to dream about but hopefully worth the effort as it was in our case. Everyone loved it, and though it's not going to be make for every ocassion, I might make it again for someone special if asked.

Walking

Evan decided to show off for Thanksgiving while Grandma and Grandpa Balke were here. He started walking. He's slow but steady and we encourage him as he goes. It was a lot of fun spending time with Grandma and Grandpa. I think they enjoyed seeing him too. Grandma was able to stay a few more days as she is between jobs right now. It was fun to have her and to go shopping. Evan got his first pair of shoes out of it. How he looks like Frankenstein when he walks with both arms out as he pulls he knees up really high as he steps. Give him a few weeks and he'll be a champ by is Birthday.

So we can't seem to go to Southern California without going to the Beach, and since we discovered the Dog Beach, it's become a must. Charlie doesn't much enjoy the water but Jon always drags him in. Evan seemed to like walking on the sand. He even tasted some. It was a fun day at the Beach in October.

Happy Halloween!

I've realized that Halloween is really high on my list of favorite holidays. There's just something about getting all dressed up, and knowing people will give you candy. I love the season of Halloween too, carving pumpkins, and yummy food. Though the chili hot dogs at the Pickering Ward Halloween Carnival can't be beat. I also have so many fond memories of my mom making us costumes. Only Mom knows how many hours went into Brian's Batman suite, including the black underwear that went on the outside that he didn't want to wear.

So we're starting Evan early. At 10 months he now knows that if he sucks long enough the wrapper of the sucker will come off and behold.... there is sweet goodness, and a sticky mess for Mom and Dad. And at some point I think he realized people were giving him things, he kept reaching in and pulling the candy out. Good thing he doesn't know that Dad and Mom, will end up eating most of his candy, this year anyway.

We can't forget our friends the Fritz's. Zayne and his Mommy dressed up too!

The funniest part of the evening was after Evan went to bed and long after the trick or treaters left, when I found Jon in the chair wearing my witch hat. Classic....

October or December

Can you tell from the pictures if it's October or December. This morning it felt more like December as we woke up to a little more than an inch of fresh snow. Yes snow on October 21st. Snow this early is not unheard of, but this much. It was fun to see and it made everything oh so beautiful. By the time we got home from Church it was all melted, which made all the kids sad, they were hoping to make snowmen, maybe there's enough for snow pumpkins. Hahahah. Even Charlie was a little shocked when he went out to go to the bathroom. So much fun.

Kolling Sealing

How lucky are we that we know Families can be together Forever. I was honored to be invited to Crystal and Brad's Sealing on Saturday October 13th in the Salt Lake Temple. How neat it is for them to now have each other for all time and eternity. It was a special day for all who where there.

So to carry on the tradition of first born child having the most pictures taken of them I've been trying to snap more pictures of Evan in action. He is a master crawler/climber now. He thinks it's funny to crawl after me as I do my house work. And anything that's 3 feet or shorter is a mountain to climb and conquer. He's learning so many new things, it's fun to watch. To top it all he's getting more teeth, lucky us. It makes him a little cranky, nothing a little Tylenol can't fix.

These two pictures are at Grandma and Grandpa Barclay's House. Grandma got out the little trampoline, Evan thought it was just another mountain to climb, he didn't quite get the jumping/bouncing action down. But from his face I'm sure you can see he still had fun.

Nothing's Safe

Whoever said babys get more fun with age was right. At 8 almost 9 months old Evan and I are having tons of fun. Evan has started moving, a sort of Army crawl and nothing is safe. His favorite dash is in the kitchen across the floor straight to Charlie's shinny metal food and water bowls. We've had to clean up a few messes and pull dog food out of his mouth. But it's fun to see him grow and learn new things. At the end of the day as he's falling asleep I think to myself, we survived another day, and we've both learned so much today.

Camping!

We love to camp and are sad when the summer comes to an end and we realize we haven't gone as much as we would have liked to. We thought we'd go one last time this year. We invited the Fritz family to come along. Two little one's just learning to crawl (yes that is a pack and play). That makes for an interesting time, not to mention no one got much sleep. But we still had fun, and look forward to next year when the little ones will be walking and we'll have to case after them.

Around the World

Keeping Evan on my lap in church today seemed like a breeze. 11 hours on the plane back from Germany was a little bit harder.

Jon, Evan and I are back from our world adventures. As crazy Americans we saw 11 major cities and countless little ones in 14 days. It was great! Here's a re-cap.....

Wittenberg has the doors Martin Luther nailed his thesis to.

Berlin still fresh from unification has countless treasures and surprises around each corner.

Dresden has done well after being flattened, rebuilding their Renaissance/Baroque buildings.

Prague has them all beat, one view of the castle at night and you'll be hooked too.

Vienna still holds the title of best ice cream, and it will always have a special place in my heart.

Berchtesgaden and the Berchtesdadener Land will enchant any visitor - No wonder my parents have such fond memories there.

Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut give Berchtesgaden some competition. Peaceful and serene Hallstatt pulls in the visitor with paths along the lake.

Ramsau and the Koenigssee are a must. All of the little churches know how to bring in the crowds with the scenery.

Salzburg is a big city trying to keep its small charm and you can't help singing (Sound of Music)

Fuessen is a stones throw from Neuschwanstein. How did I get stuck lugging Evan up and down the mountain?? It was worth it.

Rottenburg am Neckar still has its medieval walls. Were just happy to have found a place to stay, and the shopping wasn't bad.

Essen home of Oma and the Kallenberg gang.

Visiting Oma and Tante Karin, Wolfram, Marcus, Daniela, Nico, and Sina - They are the true reason we flew all that way. And what fun we had being with them. Even through language barriers (Jon and Dustin don't know much of the German) we all had a wonderful time, and are so glad we went.

Evan and Zayne

Just down the street live the Fritz Family. Zayne was born Dec 4th and Evan was born Dec 22nd. With just about 3 weeks apart they are bound to be friends, it helps that Zayne's mom Janelle and I like to get together for adult conversation. It's fun to watch the boys grow.

As we are getting ready for our round the world trip I've been taking pictures of things around the house that the family in Germany might like to see. Last time we were there we took pictures of our house being built. How time goes by.

My dad is a very talented carpenter. As a wedding gift he made our bedroom set, and the tradition continues as we asked him to make a crib for Evan. As always he went above and beyond and created real works of art that no picture can truly capture. But still a picture is better than nothing. Thank you Papa/Grandpa! (Now we just need to teach Evan to sleep in his own room). And we can't mention the crib without mentioning the further skills of my Mother who made a special little quilt for Evan. We love the baby jungle animals. Thanks Mom!

Flowers!

Jon and I decided to focus our gardening efforts on the front flower beads this year. We changed the basic shapes and added edging so the grass didn't creep in. On the side yard we created a whole new bead next to the electrical box. Our efforts have yielded quite an array of beautiful flowers. We've really enjoyed seeing different plants at their peak. Hopefully everything will make it through our city's water restrictions, and the end of the summer.

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies

I took this recipe off of Morgan's blog (One More Moore) and made it last Friday. I thought they were really some great cookies. Jon was surprised they were made with wheat flour. He proclaimed them the best I've made in a long time. Thanks Morgan!

Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookies
3/4 C Unsalted butter
1 C Sugar
1 C Light Brown Sugar
1 1/2 tsp Vanilla
2 eggs
2 Cups sifted Whole Wheat Flour
1 C Flour
3/4 tsp Baking Soda
1 tsp Salt
2 C Semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. Cream butter & sugars in an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix in vanilla & eggs. Combine flours, baking soda & salt. Gradually blend flour mixture into butter mixture. Fold in chocolate chips and drop onto a cookie sheet that has been lined with silpat or that has been greased. Bake 8-10 minutes. Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on baking sheets before placing on a wire rack.

It was a sad day when we packed up the baby swing. We figured it best to pack it up once Evan started grabbing the electronic mobile (which caused and awful clicking noise) and wiggling so much it was hard to keep him in it. The swing left an empty spot in our living room, so we've replaced it with a Jumperoo. (We found a great deal on KSL.com and drove to West Jordan to pick it up). Fashioned a bit different then the old school models that you attached to door jams, this one is free standing. Evan seems to like it, he even does a jig.

Bath time is a new thing for us! For so long we had to give Evan sponge baths because of his colostomy bag. Now that we don't have to worry about that we have fun splashing around. At first Evan didn't like the water and he just screamed. He likes it so much now that he makes a fuss when the clothes have to go back on.
